EcoTiles - DLP Serivces working to reduce air pollution

DLP installs EcoLogic — a roof tile that helps clean pollutants from the air we breath

DLP is committed to environmental protection. We're delighted to be one of the first companies to offer the installation of EcoLogic roof tiles, a new product from Marley Eternit. This unique tile absorbs Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) and improves air quality. Many people are aware of carbon emissions, but NOx is also produced from road traffic and industrial output, and contributes to the build-up of ground-level ozone, which is strongly associated with asthma and a major component of smog.

A roof covered with EcoLogic tiles can help reduce levels of NOx over its entire area. In fact it's been estimated that during the lifespan of an average-sized roof, EcoLogic tiles could remove the equivalent amount of NOx produced by a modern car covering over 100,000 miles.

Additionally, EcoLogic roof tiles are made from around 50% recycled materials, making them one of the most environmentally beneficial and sustainable roofing products on the market today. It is based on a Ludlow Major tile, which achieves an 'A' rating (the lowest environmental impact) in the Building Research Establishment's Green Guide Specification.

We're already using EcoLogic roof tiles on projects for Stockport Borough Council, and we're looking forward to a much wider use of this revolutionary product as awareness grows.

How do they work?
A granular layer fused onto the surface of the tiles contains titanium dioxide. UV rays from sunlight causes this to create active oxygen. On contact with the oxygen, NOx is oxidised to form soluble nitrate. Initially, this reaction creates nitric ions, but these are rapidly neutralised by excess calcium in the concrete of the tile to form calcium nitrate, a plant fertiliser. This is washed away as a dilute solution in rainwater. The coating is expected to continue absorbing pollutants for around 20 years.
